The London Health Centre has published this information-only resource in order to assist those wishing to protect and improve the wellbeing of themselves and their families. We receive no financial support from third party commercial sponsors or on-line advertising. Our mission is to provide objective and balanced opinion which includes input from a broad spectrum of health and fitness professionals, medical Doctors & CAM Practitioners. The London Health Centre has created a comprehensive knowledge-base of diet & lifestyle related data including research gathered from peer reviewed, scientific, clinical and observational studies. We believe this information should be freely available to everyone - more Education will inevitably lead to less Medication!

We aim to cut through all the fake testimonials, distorted facts and meaningless slogans that are frequently promoted by organisations in the health supplement, weight loss and pharmaceutical sectors; examples include: "five-a-day" ... "healthy balanced meal" ... "calorie controlled / low fat diet" ... "lose 7lbs in 7 days" and the list goes on. Not one of these one-size-fits-all sound bites is relevant to the unique needs of each individual.

For those who are confused by some of the half-baked reports that litter the tabloid press - or those dubious adverts for 'fake butter' spreads that promise to lower your Cholesterol - we suggest they consider the logic: If Cholesterol really could 'fur up' or 'clog' healthy arteries as some ignorant GP's believe, then the human race would have died out long ago. Ask any heart surgeon, they will tell you that diseased arteries contain arterial plaque that is usually riddled with numerous compounds that don't belong there including solidified Calcium (up to 20% or more) oxidised Low Density Lipoproteins (very small size particles) and other trapped material. Medically known as Coronary Artery Calcification - or CAC - solidified Calcium often builds up over a long period of time and can be identified by a CT Scan. Cholesterol on the other hand is a healing fat and humans cannot survive without it. Inflammation of an artery is a direct consequence of continuous injury to the arterial wall.

Ancient medical records indicate that over the last few-thousand years of human evolution our ancestors were not drinking chlorinated tap-water (which was only introduced in the early 1900's) or consuming highly processed foods drenched in refined salt, sugar and oxidised fats. Instead their daily diet consisted mainly of locally grown plant and animal foods that were rich in vitamins, minerals and healthy fats, plus they enjoyed an active, chemical free lifestyle that was far superior to the environment we currently find ourselves in.

Incredibly in the UK today, nearly eight million (8,000,000) of our fellow citizens are swallowing Statin drugs in an attempt to lower their Cholesterol and/or reduce their risk of suffering a heart attack. In fact it was only a few decades ago during the 1980's that a 'world-wide epidemic' swept across Planet Earth called 'High Cholesterol'. Then 'Big Pharma' invented the phrase 'Bad LDL-Cholesterol' which was simply a deliberate attempt to create fear and confusion in people's minds. Is it the LDL that is 'bad', the Cholesterol that is 'bad', or both? ... today the very word 'cholesterol' creates fear and apprehension in the minds of ill-informed and deluded consumers.

The truth is that Cholesterol and LDL (Low-Density Lipoproteins) are two very different types of molecules present in all humans. Low Density Lipoprotein is a kind of protein while Cholesterol is a fat with healing properties - they are not one and the same. When Statin drugs were used in the first clinical trials, they apparently lowered serum Cholesterol in a relatively small group of 'hand-picked' volunteers. Then in the blink of an eye, Statins became the world's number one selling drug! Statins are in fact a poison and proven to cause numerous unwanted side-effects including memory loss. They interfere with the body's natural mechanism for producing CoQ10 and Cholesterol, an essential fat that is present in every human cell including Brain cells. This begs the question, does your Brain contain 'Bad Cholesterol'? We say that any mass-medication of the general population is literally meddling with the primal forces of Nature. To support our claim, a highly respected doctor - Professor Simon Capewell, an expert in clinical epidemiology at Liverpool University - said this: "The recent Statin recommendations are deeply worrying, effectively condemning all middle-aged adults to lifelong medications of questionable value". You might think it advisable that consumers should first grasp the basics of how the human body works and identify the key nutrients needed in order to maintain good health before attempting to treat or prevent any specific ailments. However the reality is that many people suffer from a condition called 'Ignorance & Apathy' and we are urgently seeking an effective treatment for this wide-spread affliction! Through better education in our schools, clinics and other establishments it follows that many of today's 'lifestyle' drugs and 'quick fix' diet plans would eventually become redundant. Ultimately, each individual is responsible for the medicines they take and the foods they consume - no one else.

It's no real surprise that 'Big Pharma' has been hitting the headlines in recent times and for all the wrong reasons. One such organisation - GlaxoSmithKline plc - is a UK based pharmaceutical company with a global presence. Millions of patients have been prescribed medicines manufactured by Glaxo. We fully acknowledge that many serious or life threatening illnesses can only be treated effectively with allopathic (conventional) drugs and medical procedures. However, the British Public were understandably shocked when in July of 2012, GlaxoSmithKline pleaded guilty to Criminal Fraud and were fined $3 billion US Dollars. Such is the power that pharmaceutical companies hold over Governments and Regulators that no employee or Director of GSK has ever been prosecuted for this most serious of 'white collar' crimes. To learn more about GSK's admission of fraud visit: http://www.theguardian.com/business/2012/jul/03/glaxosmithkline-fined-bribing-doctors-pharmaceuticals

GSK were also caught out when two teenage students in New Zealand conducted an experiment in their school science Lab to measure the Vitamin C content in a popular fruit drink called Ribena - a brand owned by Glaxo at that time. The students discovered that Ribena contained little if any Vitamin C, the key health-giving ingredient that consumers believed they were getting. This allegation made by the students was immediately dismissed by Glaxo but later confirmed as true by the New Zealand Government. After a lengthy period of denial, GSK were eventually fined $227,500, which for the drug giants is no more than petty cash. Visit: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6498479.stm

Who can we trust? ... you may also be concerned about the increasing number of UK Charities in the medical sector that have chosen to compromise their independence by accepting 'donations' from companies within the pharmaceutical industry. Pressure groups and watchdogs complain that so called 'arm-chair experts' (Sir Rory Collins being one example) are instrumental in the policy making decisions of tax-payer funded Government Regulators, even though these individuals are often on the payroll of the drug companies. There is now growing support for a law that would require NHS Doctors and others working in the Public sector to declare any outside commercial interests they have that could be perceived as a potential conflict of interest ... it's called transparency. Even the tabloid press and other media channels are to some degree influenced by 'Big Pharma' and 'Big Food' as they depend on them for much of their advertising revenue. As a consequence, what may appear to be impartial and objective news reporting can in fact be a distorted or heavily edited version of the truth.

We believe that by having access to an independent, non-partial, information only resource, members of the Public will be better placed to make sound, informed decisions concerning their own diet and lifestyle strategies. If a common sense approach were adopted by Politicians and Health Care Regulators we believe that a greatly improved quality of life would be enjoyed by many thousands of our fellow citizens. Although charities and drug companies continue to promise 'cures' for existing diseases, they rarely promote the importance of prevention through education, which would inevitably result in less medication together with a reduced financial burden on taxpayers ... Unfortunately many in our society seem to have abdicated all responsibility for their own health and wellbeing, preferring to blame the food manufacturers for their lifestyle related illnesses.

"Biased clinical trials and biased reporting have greatly exaggerated the benefits of statin therapy while substantially underplaying serious side-effects and health risks. Independent random clinical trials and population studies lend no support to the prescription of statins for lowering cholesterol and preventing heart disease. On the contrary, evidence suggests that mass medication of healthy populations increases risk of adverse treatment effects and death."  Quote: Institute Of Science In Society.

When low-density and very low density lipoproteins (LDL-VLDL) become oxidised, they can enter directly into the inner-lining (endothelium) of an injured or damaged area of any artery in the body, including the carotid artery, coronary artery or the arteries that supply your legs and arms with blood ...

... Once embedded in the injured and inflamed area of an artery, the LDL molecules encourage the accumulation of inflammatory cells, macrophages and platelets at the site of the injury, promoting their adhesion to the artery wall. The damaged area of the artery then begins to attract free Calcium and Cholesterol that is circulating in the blood stream, plus other lipids and heavy metals that together start to form a plaque that gradually grows larger over time. You now have an occluded artery that can slow - or completely restrict - the amount of blood flow that travels around the body. This may cause numerous health problems including coronary heart disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease or even dementia. Only a change of diet & lifestyle can safely, naturally and effectively slow down or even reverse cardiovascular disease.

"We know that inflammation in the artery wall is the real cause of heart disease. Simply stated, without inflammation being present in the body, there is no way that cholesterol can accumulate in the wall of the blood vessel and cause heart disease and strokes."  Quote from Dr Dwight Lundell, former Chief of Staff & Chief of Surgery at Banner Heart Hospital USA. Dr Lundell has performed over 5,000 open heart operations and published books on this subject.
